This explains that it is signed “R LALIQUE”, since he very rarely signed his bottles for parfumeurs. This is a lovely bottle, 11.8 cm (4 3/4) tall, generally created in clear glass but some, and they are rare, were made with color patinas, Black, Grey, Blue or Ochre. This one is in Blue. Since the patinas were only made at the beginning, it must be from between 1926 and 1930. The motif depicts strings of pearls, like necklaces (photo 5). The stopper is in the shape of an “O” with a hollow center and a ring of pearls on each side. The bottle is signed R LALIQUE in raised letters under the base (photo 9), and there is also a hand-etched number (here “55”) in the center of the base (photo 8). The same number 55 appears under the base of the stopper (no photo, too small). This was a practice by high-end glassmakers to insure that each stopper fitted perfectly its bottle opening. “Palerme” is repertoried and photographed in two important books: First the large Marcilhac (the unofficial Lalique “Bible”) on page 336 of the 2010 French printing, under reference 518 (photo 11). The caption specifies that the bottle was made between 1926 and 1937, never reissued afterwards. Then in the excellent 1991 book by Marylou and Glenn Utt “The Lalique Perfume Bottles”, on page 31, (photo 10 which is a copy of the 1932 Maison Lalique catalogue). The condition is extremely good: Some patina has worn off (see all photos), but the bottle and stopper are otherwise perfect. One can pour one’s favorite perfume into the bottle, which was exactly what Lalique intended with his own “Maison Lalique” bottles.
