René Lalique’s designed his “Raisins” (Grapevine) vase in 1928, a 15.5 cm (6 tall) small and thick vase. The thickness permits it to be heavily sculpted, much deeper than most vases by Lalique. The theme is one of grapes and twigs and they cover the entirety of the surface, without any repetition. Every cluster is unique (photos 4, 5, 6). The vase is here made in an ochre (light brown smoked) patina but it also existed clear and in other colors. “Raisins” is repertoried and photographed in the large Marcilhac book, the unofficial “Lalique Bible” on page 445 of the French 2010 edition under reference “1032” (photo 9). The caption specifies that the vase was never made again after 1937 when it was removed from the Lalique catalog. The signature, R LALIQUE. FRANCE is in stenciled block letters under the base (photos 7,8). It is difficult to photograph which is why I caught it from different angles. The condition is excellent. In particular, the patina has held remarkably well. There is no break, chip, missing or flaw, even small. The bottom of the base, underneath, has some usage wear, nothing significant.
