Mont Joye, Art Glass Enameled Vase, Pansies, Amethyst On Clear, Beautiful, Tall
The vase is tall as it stands 117/8″ and is approximately 4 3/4″ in diameter at the base. The opening at the top of the vase is 3 outside diagonal measurements. The vase has a bulbous bottom with a tall cylindrical raised neck. There are vertical optic ribs surrounding the vase. The vase displays beautifully enameled Pansies in a few different colors. There are purple and yellow Pansies. These are enameled on a base glass of amethyst to clear glass. The enamel is thick and raised with wonderful detail of the pistils painted in the centers of the flower. There are sprigs of ferns in the background painted in gold that give the artwork a wispy feeling of Spring in the air. There are also leaves with nice shading of greens and purple/greens throughout the pattern. These leaves are outlined in gold. The pattern is predominantly on one side of the vase. The mottled gold enameling along the top border finishes this piece exquisitely. The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. There is minor gold enamel loss around the top rim. There is some gold gilding loss to the outline of some of the leaves on the bottom. The beauty of this vase is in the color and enameling of the flowers. The vase is not signed but it has a number “13” painted in red and a countersunk polished pontil. This is the finishing sign of a quality piece of art glass. This pattern is probably the most popular of the Mont Joye enamel flowers in this shape or form. They made this pattern in 3 sizes I believe with this being the 2nd tallest. The tallest from my recollection is 14″ and the smallest is 10″. This is a brief History of Mont Joye Glass. Glass bearing the name «deVez», «Mont Joye», and «Pantin» was produced by the same company. Monot at La Villette near Paris founded this company in 1850. In 1859, known as «Cristallerie de La Villette» the company was transferred to Pantin, at that time a suburb of Paris and now a part of Paris. Stumpf joined the company in 1868 it became «Monot & Stumpf». In 1873 Monot’s son joined the company and the name changed to «Monot, Pere et Fils et Stumpf». About 1894 the company became known as the «Stumpf, Touvier, Violette & Cooye, » and the same company produced «Pantin». After WW1 merged with Legras & Cie. Mont Joye enameled glass was produced at the turn of the Century. It was extremely popular both in Europe and North America. This is a nice size Mont Joye Vase, not over powering. This type of glass was of high quality and became very desirable among fine glass collectors. No store lets you out of the building with the merchandise unless it is paid for.
